Down at Axmouth fishing port
18th December, 2018

Fisherman Charlie Ziemann from Axmouth fishing port in Lyme Bay Fisheries and Conservation Reserve demonstrating the use of his insulated fish boxes and ice onboard his boat as an immediate step to keep his fish iced.

These include two insulated boxes; one for slushed-ice to reduce core temperature quickly and the other filled with ice to keep the fish cool. Slushed-ice is crucial to reduce the core temperature of fish as soon as they are caught. This will increased their shelf-life and therefore their marketability.

As fishermen have agreed to a reduction in gear levels in the interests of the environment, it is therefore desirable to help them achieve an optimum price for their catch by way of providing basic ice facilities within their port.

The insulated boxes and chiller room facility providing ice and fish storage is part funded by the Blue Marine Foundation (facilitators of the Lyme Bay Fisheries and Conservation Reserve) and the European Fisheries Fund (EFF).

The fishing ports of Beer, Lyme Regis and West Bay all have their own chiller rooms and ice making facilities and is being used to great success.

Rare find in Lyme Bay Reserve
14th November, 2018

A rare find by Lyme Regis fisherman Nigel Hill during a trip out in Lyme Bay Reserve.

Naturalist and professional wildlife photographer Steve Trewhella, based in Dorset, identified the seahorse as a male Short-snouted seahorse (Hippocampus hippocampus). According to Steve you can see the flattened pouch at the front, slightly shorter snout, and triangle like coronet on the top of the head which are the distinct marks of this particular specie of seahorse.

Want to learn more about our native Seahorses? The check out Steve's book called In the Company of Seahorses: https://wildnaturepress.com/ou…/in-the-company-of-seahorses/

Spiny Lobster in Lyme Bay
29th October, 2018

Lyme Regis fisherman Nigel Hill caught a spiny lobster a few weeks ago. The spiny lobster is thought to be making a comeback across the South West and over in the Channel Islands. They were wiped out by overfishing in the 80s so this is a really exciting find.

Commercially caught species within Lyme Bay Reserve are many and diverse and the Lyme Bay reefs and associated flora and fauna are considered to be nationally important conservation features.

Head over to our website to discover more about this wonderful and diverse area: www.lymebayreserve.co.uk/marine-life/

Construction work complete in West Bay
7th September, 2018

Construction work is now complete outside the West Bay chiller unit with racks next to the chiller for storage. The chiller unit provides fishermen from Lyme Bay Fisheries and Conservation Reserve who fish out of West Bay access to insulated storage which will help to improve the quality, durability and value of their landed catches.

As fishermen have agreed to a reduction in gear levels in the interests of the environment, it is therefore desirable to help them achieve an optimum price for their catch by way of providing these facilities within their ports.

The construction work was paid for by West Dorset District Council and the storage racks built and paid for by the Harbour team. The chiller unit was part funded by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) and the Blue Marine Foundation. The West Bay chiller unit now completes the set with similar facilities in the ports of Lyme Regis, Axmouth and Beer, which are all being used to great success.

Honiton Sea Angling Club Competition
20th July, 2018

Great write-up from Mike Spiller of Honiton Sea Angling Club about the recent self-drive plaice competition fishing from Beer in Lyme Bay Reserve;

‘Well what a great evening we had last night at Beer in the club self-drive plaice competition. The winner to be decided by measuring the longest three plaice in the three hour competition. Over 30 plaice were caught during the match between the ten small boats, with most being returned to fight another day. Each boat had three anglers aboard. Other fish caught on the night were rays, conger, smooth-hound and gurnards. Well done to Adam Taylor on winning with three fish for 1.24m. Runner up was Karl Allen with 1.14m and third was James Trevett with 1.11m. A big thank you to Simon Bartlett for the self drives. Chris at Seaton for kindly getting in extra bait and finally Blue Marine Foundation who manage the Lyme Bay Reserve out there. If it wasn't for them our fishing would be by far not so good’.

King Ina C of E Academy school visit
4th July, 2018

Fisherman Gavin Ziemann from Axmouth headed to King Ina C of E Academy school yesterday to present to two classes about marine litter. Here's what Gavin had to say;

"Both classes were very engaged and already doing litter projects. They were well informed and had a good idea of how litter ended up in the seas and on the beaches, however they had mainly focused on plastics, so it was good to talk about other types of marine litter". Mandy Wolfe, Blue Marine Foundation South West Coordinator who oversees the day-to-day running of Lyme Bay Reserve also attend the visit;

"It was a great day yesterday, the school was very engaged and have been working this term on many projects to do with plastics. The school has a school council that has approached their governors with proposals looking at plastic use within the school, how they use it and what they could use instead. They have also been a part of Surfers Against Sewage".
Sounds like King Ina C of E Academy has been very active in understanding marine litter this term, which is great to see. Great work everyone involved.

Photos show a selection of students marine litter work.

Mari Walker our Education Consultant went along to All Saints School in Weymouth, Dorset yesterday and assist fisherman Gavin Ziemann in his sustainable fishing presentation. Here's what she had to say;

'We were warmly welcomed today to All Saints School by Mrs Allen and her year 9s. They were very interested in what Gavin had to say about the marine life in the Reserve and how it is sustainably fished. There were great questions about the utilisation of cuttlefish and surprise at the difference in size between king and queen scallops! They were keen to find out the different fishing techniques used within the bay and were impressed by the use of tracking systems so they can find out exactly how far their fish has travelled before they eat it'.

If you work in education and would like a FREE visit please contact Nicky Mitchard our Education Outreach Officer to book your visit: .
We are now at full capacity this academic year however we are now taking books from September onwards.

Whale Sighting
25th June, 2018

An email came in over the weekend from Neal Simons from Charmouth who spotted what he thinks was a whale in Lyme Bay. Here's what he had to say;

'I live in Charmouth Dorset and just wanted to mention I spotted a whale (perhaps an Orca) off our coast at around 5:30 PM on Saturday evening (23/06/18). Was heading west and seen about 1/2 a mile off our beach. Although I’ve lived in the UK for the past 16 years, prior I lived in Florida, quite accustomed to seeing tons of dolphins and know the difference. Definitely had that long relatively narrow Orca dorsal fin and the flukes were a match to my eye, sadly no photo, seen through binoculars. Was able to get a good sense of the massive scale as there was a boat not too far away behind it. At first there was a thrashing of whitewater that caught my attention, then the dorsal fin breached the surface twice, a blow of spray and then the flukes. Couldn’t see any white markings (didn’t come out high enough) definitely seemed all black as a looked at it in direct sunlight, not shadow.'

We think MARINElife will be interested in this sighting. MARINElife is a UK-based charity established to coordinate and develop a growing portfolio of global cetacean and seabird research and monitoring projects. Through these projects and collaborations with like-minded organisations they aim to further the conservation of the wildlife of oceans and coasts through scientific investigation and educational activities.

Common Thresher shark spotted in Lyme Bay
19th June, 2018

JAW dropping images of a Common Thresher Shark taken by Tom Brereton of MARINElife during a recent Naturetrek Wildlife Holidays' Seabirds & Cetaceans of Lyme Bay' trip last week. Quote from Naturetrek Wildlife Holidays;

'Guests on our 'Seabirds & Cetaceans of Lyme Bay' last week were treated to a once in a lifetime encounter with a Common Thresher Shark! The shark gave a stunning display, breaching several times right next to the boat. Threshers use their abnormally long tail to stun shoaling fish, making them easier to catch. Thanks to tour leader Tom Brereton for the photos'.

Mari Walker the Lyme Bay Fisheries and Conservation Reserve Education Consultant headed off to Woodwater Academy in Exeter last week to present a session on Marine Litter to a mixed year 5/6 group and here's what Mari had to say about her visit;

"This session was presented to a lovely group of attentive listeners. Some of the year 6s had been doing some work on plastic waste already and were keen to get some more information to fuel letters they have been sending to try and solve our plastic problem. Both the staff and the pupils were surprised at the scale of the problem, but the pupils were keen to come up with solutions to try and prevent plastic and other litter ending up in our oceans. They were interested in the variety of litter that is found on our beaches and by our fishermen and were eager to spread the word as to how everyone can do their bit to help with this problem".

Well done Mari and the Woodwater pupils. If you work in education and would like a FREE visit please contact our Education Programme Coordinator Nicky Mitchard: . We are fully booked this year however we are now taking bookings for the next academic year starting in September 2018.

Positive comments from a recreational angler about the Reserve
31st May, 2018

A great quote sent in to Blue Marine Foundation (facilitators of Lyme Bay Fisheries ad Conservation Reserve) by Steve Wainwright aboard his boat ‘Ollie’ from Axmouth about the fishing he recently experienced in Lyme Bay Reserve;

"I thought I would give some feedback to the Blue Marine Foundation from a recreational anglers perspective. I feel that the Reserve is really maturing now, in addition the angling experience mentioned later I noticed a great deal of 'sign' on my FishFinder, much more than I would normally expect. In my mind the reserve is working and working well. I had a great trip out today on a half tide and picked up Mackerel, Dogs, Huss, Plaice and the biggest Conger I have ever seen, easily as long as I am tall, it gave a real battle on a light rod and 20lb line, I was unable to net it so I considered the gaff but its not something I like to do as if you get it wrong the fish will die. Also it would have caused mayhem on the boat! A great day and not very far out. The Conger, Huss and some Dogfish were returned."

West Bay Chiller Unit
14th May, 2018

The West Bay chiller unit is up and running providing fishermen from Lyme Bay Fisheries and Conservation Reserve who fish out of West Bay access to insulated storage which will help to improve the quality, durability and value of their landed catches.

As fishermen have agreed to a reduction in gear levels in the interests of the environment, it is therefore desirable to help them achieve an optimum price for their catch by way of providing these facilities within their ports.

Part funded by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) and the Blue Marine Foundation the West Bay chiller unit completes the set with similar facilities in the ports of Lyme Regis, Axmouth and Beer, which are all being used to great success.

Fish Boxes
4th May, 2018

New fish boxes have arrived in Lyme Bay Reserve for our fishermen to use. Because the fishermen have agreed to a reduction in gear levels in the interests of the environment, it is therefore desirable to help them achieve an optimum price for their catch by way of providing basic ice facilities within their port. With the provision of these boxes along with ice making equipment this will improve the quality, durability and value of the landed catches.

The availability of on-site ice will also lead to increased competitiveness and improved quality of the fishermen's catch. In turn this will lead to increased value on their existing catch from existing markets. A win for the environment and a win for the fishermen.

Reserve Seafood
26th April, 2018

Some tasty looking plaice and lobster caught in Lyme Bay Reserve recently being weighed by collection and delivery driver Gary for Reserve Seafood.

Reserve Seafood is a premium product which is a result of the fishermen's dedication to catch quality, whereby each fisher is signed up to the Lyme Bay Fisheries and Conservation Reserve and is accredited to the Seafish Responsible Fishing Scheme, which assures catch quality and fishing standards. The Voluntary Codes of Conduct that each fisherman adheres to and the science which measures the results of fishing efforts in the Bay informs the sustainability of the product.

Education Outreach Programme Update
25th April, 2018

Our Education Outreach Team was invited back to The Thomas Hardye School on Monday to present to the whole of Year 9 about sustainable fishing.

This time Dr Adam Rees from Blue Marine Foundation (facilitators of the Lyme Bay Fisheries and Conservation Reserve) presented the two back-to-back sessions to around 500 students in total. He talked about sustainably managing Lyme Bay Reserve's marine environment and its resources. He also gave an overview of how he got involved in the project and what it is like to be a Marine Biologist working in this field. Adam said the students were really engaged and asked some good questions at the end.

Teacher Andrew Ellison quotes; 'I would like to thank you for organising the visit yesterday. There is a big range of abilities in our Y9 cohort and I think it is difficult trying to pitch a talk that engages all students. I asked my colleagues and they all agreed with me that Adam got it spot on. It was of a suitable amount of time, included participation from the students and allowed enough time for questions'.

Fisherman Gavin Ziemann also attended the visit and took the attached photos.

Great work Education Outreach Team! Keep up the good work.

Education Outreach Programme Update
23rd April, 2018

Excellent fun was had last week at Damers First School in Dorchester, Dorset talking about marine litter. Reporting back on the visit was Dr Adam Rees who conducted the visit, "Phrases you like to hear like 'I have an invention to solve the plastic problem’ ‘Our school is aiming to become plastic free’ ‘I want to be a marine biologist". Some inspiring quotes from the children and great to see young minds working hard to solve the problems we face in our marine world.

This morning also saw a visit back to The Thomas Hardye School in Dorchester presenting to the whole of Year 9… that's over 200 students! Stay tuned for a full report on today's visit.

Education Outreach Update
23rd April, 2018

It has been a busy week for our Education Outreach Team who have been visiting schools in Devon and Dorset to spread with word about sustainable fishing and marine litter.

Fisherman Gavin Ziemann (pictured) from Axmouth fishing port in Lyme Bay is one of the Education Outreach Ambassadors. On Wednesday he visited Our Lady & St Patrick's School in Teignmouth to present two back-to-back presentations about marine litter found in and around Lyme Bay.

And yesterday Adam Rees, Blue Marine Foundation Research Officer headed to Sidmouth Primary School to conduct two more back-to-back presentations about marine litter. Here’s what Adam had to say; ‘The sessions were brilliant yesterday, around 140 kids in total. All really engaged. They had all recently been working on pollution and plastics in the environment (including writing to the PM) so were really enthusiastic - even coming up with inventions for solving the plastic problem. One girl came up to me at the end as she had been drawing a poster while I was talking'. But that’s not all! Today Gavin was invited back to Marshwood Primary School in Bridport to talk about marine litter. Stay tuned to find out how he got on.

Rare sighting of a Gray Triggerfish
12th February, 2018

Research Assistant Chloe Game of Plymouth University Marine Institute has been going through archive footage filmed in Lyme Bay and found this rare sighting of a Gray Triggerfish.

The jaw of the Triggerfish contains eight strong incisor teeth which it uses to chisel holes in mussels and other hard shelled molluscs to get at the soft flesh inside. In September, 2007 Triggerfish were reported on several occasion fighting each other on wrecks in Lyme Bay. The Triggerfish were seen with lumps bitten out of each other!

The Triggerfish is a visitor to British waters from warmer Southern seas. During the summer divers can see these Triggerfish around wrecks in Lyme Bay. When hiding in crevices they hold their position using the first spine on their dorsal fin locking it in place with the second spine. The second spine also acts as a trigger to unlock the first spine and hence the name Triggerfish. Video by: sheehanresearchgroup.com / Plymouth University

Something to brighten up your Monday
22nd January, 2018

We love sharing this video of a scallop swimming along the Lyme Bay seabed. Most species of the scallop family are free-living active swimmers, propelling themselves through the water through the use of the adductor muscles to open and close their shells. Swimming occurs by the clapping of valves for water intake.

This video was filmed by Plymouth University Marine Institute as part of the Lyme Bay Fisheries and Conservation Reserve Scientific Potting Study.

Underwater Wonders of Lyme Bay
9th January, 2018

The East Tennants Reef in Lyme Bay supports one of densest and most extensive populations of seafans in the English Channel. The seafans found here are notable for their large size in addition to the high density found here and that is why the Lyme Bay Fisheries and Conservation Reserve aims to look after this rich habitat through sustainable fisheries management.

Local underwater photographer Colin Munro who filmed this rocky reef in about 24-29 meters approximately 5 miles offshore describes the reefs in Lyme Bay as mostly low lying and the waters tend to be fairly gloomy and turbid. As this is essentially a large, open, sandy bay exposed to the prevailing winds, then significant amounts of suspended sediment are the norm.

Whilst winds may ease in summer, it is also prone to strong plankton blooms during May and June, with a second less pronounced bloom in late summer. Thus underwater visibility rarely exceeds 10 metres (30ft) and frequently may be less than 3 metres (10ft). The reefs in the bay, though numerous in the centre and east, are mostly discontinuous, forming a patchwork of low rocky outcrops surrounded by sediment. This means that they tend to be covered by thin veneers of sediment as tide and wave action lifts and sweeps sand across them. This makes it a rather challenging environment for the underwater photographer. Low light levels and high levels of suspended sediment producing lots of backscatter from lights making for tricky problems in producing good images.

Bracing the cold northerly wind!
8th January, 2018

Here are some photos of builders working on the cladding on the West Bay chiller unit this morning in a freezing northerly wind.

The chiller unit is part of the Lyme Bay Fisheries and Conservation Reserve’s aim to improve existing port facilities with the provision of chiller facilities and insulated fish boxes, which help to improve the quality, durability and value of the landed catches by the fishermen. As fishermen have agreed to a reduction in gear levels in the interests of the environment, it is therefore desirable to help them achieve an optimum price for their catch by way of providing basic chiller facilities within their port. The availability of this chiller unit will lead to increased competitiveness and improved quality of the fishermen's catch. In turn this will lead to increased value on their existing catch from existing markets.

The chiller unit is part funded by the Blue Marine Foundation (facilitators of the Lyme Bay Fisheries and Conservation Reserve) and the European Fisheries Fund. The fishing ports of Beer, Axmouth and Lyme Regis already have their chiller units and are being used to great success.

Also pictured is the Axmouth chiller unit (on a warm summer's day) with the cladding complete. For more information about the fishermen's catch visit: www.lymebayreserve.co.uk/reserve-seafood/

Schools Outreach 2018
5th January, 2018

A new year means the start of more visits by the Lyme Bay Schools Outreach Team. Since the start in January 2014 they have visited 85 schools in the Devon and Dorset area engaging with some 5,188 students. 20 of these visits have been repeat bookings, which must mean we're doing something right!

The programme involves fishing representatives visiting schools to deliver an adaptable presentation which has proved highly popular so far with teachers reporting that school children have been engaged and delighted by demonstrations of different fishing methods and the life-cycle of a lobster, featuring a live lobster. In the last year Blue Marine Foundation (facilitators of Lyme Bay Reserve) have developed the project to formalise and structure a more comprehensive programme reaching out to more students and using innovative techniques.

Do you work at a school and are interested in a FREE visit? Then contact Nicky Mitchard, Schools Outreach Coordinator: to secure your booking in 2018.
